Since launching US stocks back in September, some of you have reached out wanting to know a bit more about how the taxman views U.S. investments. Although we are not tax experts, we know a few who were willing to share some insights with us. Nerd alert! Do you know your B’s and C’s?

It’s that time of year again and the form dispersing fairies are out in full force, making sure you have all you need to do your 2015/2016 tax return. The guys at SARS are expecting some tax certificates from you, which you’ll soon be able to download from the 'Reports' section on our website. These are your IT3B and IT3C certificates which tell SARS how much money you’ve earnt from your investments.

How tax works on your EasyEquities account

As an EasyEquities investor you will have to consider one or a combination of the following taxes.

Income Tax on Trading Profits
Capital Gains Tax on Investment Capital
Dividends Withholding Tax
Income Tax on Interest Income

If tax is unavoidable, does it have to be so difficult to deal with as well? Of course, accountants will disagree with this statement, arguing that tax is simplicity in itself.  Why, then, do they – all accountants – charge so much to complete tax returns for simple souls such as us?
