How trail running and investing go hand-in-hand

The Otter Trail Run takes place annually and runs in the opposite direction each year. The Otter trail itself is officially the oldest and undoubtedly the most iconic hiking trail in South Africa, which runs along the spectacular coastline between the Storms River mouth and Nature's Valley and was opened in 1968. It's considered to be one of the finest multi-day trails in the world and more than half the entrants for the Otter Trail Run are already investors on EasyEquities.

We’re super excited to have Adidas Terrex join the family as this year’s technical sponsor! We’re equally excited about the fact that you can own shares in Adidas in your #EasyEUR wallet 😉

This news got us thinking how similar trail running and investing are.

Just like trail running, investing can be daunting, even scary at times. But more than anything – it can be so rewarding!

When asked what he loves most about trail running, EasyEquities athlete Justin Pearse said he loves the culture, which is very different to road running. “It’s a running subculture all on its own - almost like a skateboarding culture. It’s more relaxed and friendly in general. You have to witness the Otter finish line for a taste of it. How many other marquee events, do you get to stand right on the finish line and welcome in your friends and family, every one of which receive a rousing welcome-home from the crowd. It’s very special.”

Now some might think: not everyone can do trail running. Just like some people believe they can’t invest. So naturally, knowing how tough the Otter Trail Run is - it’s literally known as The Grail of Trail due to the marathon distance, four river crossings, over 2400 meters of elevation gain and 11 significant climbs - we asked Justin if he thinks anyone could complete it. “Yes. Absolutely” he said. “With a plan from someone in the know and some discipline in executing that plan over a 6-12 month period, it can definitely be done.” And the same goes for investing. A little discipline and sticking to your investment strategy and: look at you go! Your journey is off to a great start! And TeamEasy is always here, cheering you on from the side lines. If ever you feel you need a little boost, like an energy bar mid-trail run, you can check out our research portal and blogs for a little pick me up. Before you know it, you’ll be finding your stride as an EasyVSTR.

Now we’re not saying everyone must run this epic trail marathon because, we know it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Easy’s Wealth Specialist, Sithembile Kunene, who goes by SK, has completed the Dassie more than once. You can choose to do the 6km or 11km Dassie trail instead of the 42km Otter trail, just like you can choose to invest in a variety of your EasyEquities wallets.
When asked why she does it year after year she said: “I do it to get away, get in touch with myself and simple enjoy nature on that side of our beautiful country. The physical and health benefits cannot be underestimated. As an enthusiastic hiker, I find this very challenging as I push myself through those inclines in order to see those beautiful coastal views from the top.” Much like pushing through tough times in the market when it comes to investing.

On EasyEquities you don’t need to invest millions – although some do – you can choose the Dassie of trail runs, and invest R100.

Many Otter runners and their families already invest on EasyEquities. Join the community today and get investing in all your favourite brands.
