EasyEquities Kicks Off National Savings Month with the Langelihle Phili Championship Cup

This year, as we kick off National Savings Month, we partnered with the Langelihle Phili Championship Cup to promote a message that extends far beyond football. While the tournament showcased talent, teamwork, and determination on the field, it also provided the perfect opportunity to encourage players and supporters to begin their wealth-building journeys.

By bringing investing to the heart of the tournament, we demonstrated that financial empowerment can start anywhere - even on the sidelines of a local football match.

Creating Opportunities On and Off the Field

Langelihle Phili, a professional Under-21 football player for Stellenbosch FC - a club owned by the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, which is backed by Remgro Limited - has turned his passion for the game into a platform for empowering his community. Through the Langelihle  Phili Championship Cup, he is creating opportunities for aspiring footballers to showcase their talent, compete at a high level, and gain valuable exposure. The tournament provides a platform for players to be recognised for their abilities while inspiring them to pursue opportunities both on and off the field. His vision of using football to uplift the community aligns closely with EasyEquities' mission of empowering South Africans to build a better financial future, making this partnership a natural fit.

“I grew up witnessing many talented people around me being limited by a lack of opportunity. Many of my peers weren’t able to pursue their dreams due to financial and social barriers, but I was lucky enough to receive the opportunities that allowed me to develop my talent and ultimately live my dream as a professional footballer... Recognising this privilege, I decided to start this tournament with the purpose of ensuring that more players are given the same chance to succeed and be seen. The end goal is to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity,” Langelihle Phili explains

Showcasing Local Football Talent

The matches throughout the Langelihle Phili Championship Cup were fiercely contested, with every team demonstrating passion, determination, and a strong desire to compete. From the opening whistle to the final whistle, the intensity on the field kept supporters captivated, with moments of individual brilliance, exceptional teamwork, and high-quality football on display. The tournament was a true showcase of the remarkable talent within the Pinetown community, highlighting the depth of skill among the area's emerging football stars and reinforcing the importance of creating platforms that allow local players to shine and pursue even greater opportunities.

Reflecting on the impact of the tournament beyond football, tournament Kyra Comins says: "During the holidays, kids need somewhere to be and something positive to be a part of. If they're on a football field, they're not getting caught up in things they shouldn't be. Seeing so many young players, families and people from the community come together over the weekend is exactly why we do this. Football has a way of bringing people together, and if we can create an environment where kids can enjoy themselves, make memories and stay out of trouble at the same time, then we've done something worthwhile."

Investing Beyond the Final Whistle

The Langelihle Phili Championship Cup gave EasyEquities the opportunity to support a community-driven initiative that is developing local football talent while creating a lasting impact off the field. Throughout the tournament, we engaged with players, coaches, supporters, and community members, sharing the importance of investing and financial literacy. We also had the privilege of meeting each Man of the Match after every game, celebrating their outstanding performances, capturing memorable moments, and introducing them to the idea that the same discipline and consistency that make a great footballer can also help build long-term wealth.

A key highlight of the sponsorship was our "From Soccer Player to Investor" initiative. Each Man of the Match will receive their cash prize directly into their EasyEquities account once they have successfully registered, giving them the opportunity to take their first step as an investor. Rather than simply receiving a cash reward, players could invest in companies connected to the global football ecosystem, including leading sportswear brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Puma. This initiative reinforces the message that players can be part of the game not only on the field, but also as investors in the businesses that power the sport.

Sparking a Savings and Investing Mindset

Beyond engaging with players, the tournament gave us a platform to spark meaningful conversations about investing with supporters and the wider community. National Savings Month serves as an important reminder that building wealth begins with small, consistent actions, and we were encouraged by the interest shown by attendees who wanted to learn more about investing. Our presence at the tournament helped make investing more approachable and demonstrated that anyone can begin their investment journey, regardless of their background or income.

"As we kick off National Savings Month, there's no better time to remind South Africans that wealth creation starts with a single step. Through our partnership with the Langelihle Phili Championship Cup, we wanted to show that investing is for everyone - including the talented footballers entertaining their communities every weekend. Our goal is to help turn today's match winners into tomorrow's long-term investors," said Nicola Comninos, CEO of EasyRetire.

Building Lasting Community Partnerships

The tournament also provided an opportunity to amplify this message through a local radio interview, where EasyEquities spoke about the importance of financial empowerment, grassroots sport, and creating opportunities beyond the game.

"One of the greatest outcomes of this partnership has been the relationships we've built with the teams, supporters, organisers, and the broader community," said Xolani Masango, Stakeholder Relations Consultant at EasyRetire. "These collaborations strengthen trust, and trust is essential when introducing people to investing. By working together, we're able to meet communities where they are and demonstrate that investing is for everyone. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to continuing our work with the organisers and the wider community to help more South Africans become investors, "Essay Govender, Head of Sales at EasyRetire, added.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Investors

By combining football with financial education, we hope to inspire a new generation to think differently about money, embrace investing early, and realise that success doesn't end at the final whistle - it continues through the financial decisions they make for their future.
