July is a time of reflection, compassion, and service, most notably marked by Mandela Day on the 18th, when South Africans and people across the world are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time in service of others.
It’s a reminder that each person has the power to make a difference, no matter how small the act. In this spirit of active citizenship, we turn our focus this month to helping those most in need by highlighting the work of organisations that live this ethos daily.
Our latest Donate for Good beneficiary, Trinity Soup Kitchen, is a shining example of what it means to “lend a hand.” Run by the Braamfontein conference of the Society of St Vincent de Paul and based at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, this church-based outreach programme supports Johannesburg’s homeless, refugees, and vulnerable families.
Mbali Thabethe, who is the Deputy President of the Holy Trinity Braamfontein Conference, said: "The country’s rising unemployment and escalating cost of living have left many citizens struggling to make ends meet. In Braamfontein and surrounding areas such as Hillbrow and the Johannesburg CBD, the impact is particularly visible, with countless individuals facing homelessness, unable to make ends meet, and in search of safe and secure, affordable accommodation and housing."
Every Monday evening, they offer not only warm soup and bread to 200–300 individuals but also dignity, medical care, clothing, and support, reminding each person that they are seen and valued.

Throughout the week, the kitchen continues its mission by providing meals to about 150 people daily and distributing clothing, shoes, blankets, and food parcels to those in need.
"At the heart of our mission is a commitment to serve with love, respect, and compassion. The funds raised through the Donate for Good campaign enable us to continue providing a daily hot meal to anyone in need who walks through our doors. Beyond this core activity, the contribution also supports our broader services, which help restore dignity and offer a path forward. This includes providing essentials such as clothing, shoes, toiletries, and blankets, as well as covering the costs of reissuing lost identity documents and qualification certificates - often the first step in helping someone rebuild their life," Mbali added.
Trinity's outreach extends beyond basic care: through training initiatives and educational support for refugee children, Trinity Soup Kitchen offers a path forward for many who have fallen through society’s safety nets. Their work is powered by just 10 dedicated members and a community of volunteers who serve without judgment or condition.
“As we embrace July’s message of service, may we be inspired by organisations like Trinity Soup Kitchen”. Veronique Van Rensburg, Head of Education at EasyEquities, said. “Whether it's giving our time, sharing our resources, or simply choosing kindness, we each have the ability to make someone’s life a little easier. This Mandela Month, let us all lend a hand where we can and be part of the change that builds a more compassionate and connected world.” To learn more about "Donate for Good," click here or below.
