This year at the Apple Event, Apple unveiled the slimmer iPhone Air, its first major iPhone redesign in years.
CEO Tim Cook called it the “biggest leap ever for iPhone,” with the launch headlining the annual showcase that also featured updates to the Apple Watch and AirPods Pro.
Design First, AI Second
The iPhone 17 Air underscores Apple’s renewed focus on design while keeping AI in the background. “It’s a reminder that Apple’s competitive advantage remains rooted in product experience rather than raw AI as a product,” said Emarketer analyst Gadjo Sevilla. Analysts noted that Apple is leaning on hardware innovation to maintain its edge as rivals push harder into artificial intelligence.
Market and Investor Reaction
Still, investor reaction was muted. Apple shares fell about 1.5% after the event and are down nearly 4% this year, reflecting doubts about whether the new lineup can reignite momentum. The iPhone Air will also face stiff competition from Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, released earlier this year.
Key announcements included:
Beyond new product launches, Apple continues to nudge users toward upgrades by limiting iOS compatibility on older models. Each year, devices left behind lose access to software updates, security patches, and new features, pushing users toward the latest hardware. Reports suggest several iPhones will be cut off with the next iOS release, reinforcing this long-standing strategy.
Jonathan Marais, EasyEquities Head of Social Media, summed it up with a tongue-in-cheek post:
Them: Should I upgrade to iPhone 17?
Us: Nah, I’ll upgrade my $USD account with more Apple stock.

The Upgrade Dilemma
The strategy of excluding older devices could help drive steady demand for new devices, supporting recurring revenue from both hardware sales and services tied to the latest iOS ecosystem. In contrast, it risks frustrating loyal users who feel pressured to replace still-functional devices, which could eventually impact brand loyalty and long-term sales growth.
The key question for investors is whether this upgrade cycle continues to generate enough momentum to offset slowing global smartphone demand and intensifying competition from rivals like Samsung and Huawei.
