Weekly Dividends Update

Weekly Dividends Update
3:25

It’s an earnings week in the mining sector, with some of the world’s largest miners, including Anglo American, BHP, Kumba Iron Ore, AngloGold Ashanti, Glencore, and Rio Tinto, preparing to announce their financial results.

During this period, investors will find out how much these mining giants have generated in earnings, while their dividend policies provide an indication of how much of those earnings could be paid out as dividends.

When it comes to dividend policies:

  • BHP has a dividend policy of paying a minimum of 50% of its earnings and will announce its half-year results on 17 February.

  • Glencore pays a fixed $1 billion, plus 25% of prior-year adjusted free cash flow from its industrial assets and will publish its full-year results on 18 February.

  • Kumba Iron Ore, which is announcing its full-year results, targets a payout range of between 50% and 75% of headline earnings and is expected to report on 19 February.

  • Rio Tinto has a target payout ratio of between 40% and 60% of underlying earnings and will report its annual results on 19 February.

  • Anglo American PLC has a policy to pay out at least 40% of underlying earnings and will report results on 20 February.

  • AngloGold Ashanti aims to pay 50% of annual free cash flow plus $0.50 per share annually, which is paid quarterly, and will be reporting its year-end results on 20 February.

In terms of when dividend payouts are expected:

  • Anglo American - Dividend announced with results, paid in May; next expected to be announced in August and paid in September.

  • Glencore - Pays twice yearly, usually late May/early June and late September; 2026 dividend calendar to be announced after results; completing $1 billion share buyback.

  • BHP, Kumba Iron Ore, and Rio Tinto pay twice yearly, with dividends announced alongside results:

    • BHP expected to pay in March and September/October

    • Kumba Iron Ore in March and August

    • Rio Tinto in April and September

  • AngloGold Ashanti - Dividends are usually announced in February, May, August, and November, with payment made the following month.

When it comes to companies that have declared dividends with upcoming last dates to trade to qualify for the payouts:

  • Yum! Brands continues its tradition of increasing its cash dividend, boosting the upcoming dividend included in this week’s update.

  • Solstice Advanced Materials Inc. will pay its first quarterly dividend following its spin-off from Honeywell, with the last date to trade falling this week.

  • Plus500 Ltd will pay both an ordinary and special dividend in its latest distribution, continuing its practice of returning additional cash to shareholders.

    • Since 2023, the company has paid ordinary and special dividends twice yearly, with the February dividend included in the latest update.

    • It has authorised a $100 million share buyback earlier this month.

Barclays has indicated that it intends to return around £15 billion to shareholders in the form of dividends and share buybacks by the end of 2028. Barclays will be paying a cash dividend to shareholders in both the US and UK markets.

  • Other names in this week’s dividend update that will be paying dividends across multiple markets include Shell, GSK, and BP.

Government bonds offer a reliable way to earn fixed income by lending money to the government in exchange for regular interest payments.
Dividends are one of the many key components of investing, representing a share of a company's profits distributed to its shareholders.
Special dividends, also known as extraordinary dividends, are one-time payments made by companies to shareholders due to specific financial events, like windfall profits or asset sales.
