The story behind the new Squirrel Away EasyETFs Balanced AMETF

The Squirrel Away EasyETFs Balanced Actively Managed is now live, available in ZAR, TFSA and RA accounts.

There are some parenting experiences that require no explanation. Like walking into your kid’s room, looking at a mountain of toys - the broken ones, the forgotten ones, the ones that absolutely had to come home with you - and wondering how you accumulated quite so much stuff. For Sibongile ‘Sibo’ Maputla, that moment sparked a much bigger question:

What if some of the money we spend on gifts for our kids could instead be put towards their future?

Sibo knew a thing or two about investing. She’d spent her career in financial services, asset management and investment management before becoming an entrepreneur.  So she did the maths. And that Saturday morning clean-out eventually became Squirrel Away, a business built around rethinking gifting and helping families put something away for the people they love.  Now, that idea has taken another step forward.

Squirrel Away and EasyETFs have partnered to launch the Squirrel Away EasyETFs Balanced Actively Managed ETF.

And there’s a lot more to the partnership than a rather memorable name.

What if building a child’s future took a village too?

One of our favourite moments from our conversation with Sibo and EasyETFs MD David Oberholzer came when David spoke about an idea he understands much better since becoming a dad himself:

It takes a village to raise a child.

Sibo took that thought one step further.

Why can’t it take a village to help build a child’s financial future too?

It’s an idea that sits at the heart of Squirrel Away: turning something families and friends already do - giving - into an opportunity to think longer term.  And it’s part of what made the relationship between Squirrel Away and EasyETFs feel like such a natural fit.
Watch Carly Esterhuizen chat to Sibo Maputla and David Oberholzer about the idea that started Squirrel Away, why the EasyETFs partnership clicked and what’s inside the new AMETF:

So, what exactly is the Squirrel Away EasyETFs Balanced AMETF?

The story might have started with toys, but there’s a serious investment strategy behind the fund. Sibo says simplicity and accessibility were important when deciding what kind of product to create.

Instead of expecting an investor to decide for themselves how much to put into equities, bonds, property or money markets, the Squirrel Away EasyETFs Balanced Actively Managed ETF brings different asset classes together in one professionally managed portfolio.

Sibo explains that the fund has a maximum equity allocation of 60%, with the portfolio also including bonds, money market instruments and property. And because it’s actively managed, investment decisions within the fund are made by professional managers rather than simply tracking an index.

The fund is available through ZAR, TFSA and RA accounts on EasyEquities.

AMETFs aren't the new kid anymore

The launch also comes as actively managed ETFs are becoming a more familiar part of the investment landscape. As David explains, one of the things that makes the category interesting is the combination of active management with the accessibility of an exchange-traded product.

His view is that many of the AMETFs coming to market have something else going for them too: a clearly defined strategy and purpose.
