The Toughest Routes Build the Strongest Legs (and Portfolios)

The Toughest Routes Build the Strongest Legs (and Portfolios)

You don’t train for Comrades overnight. And you don’t build wealth that way either. But one Pretoria running club is doing both; one hill, one investment at a time.

Running Hills Isn’t Just Good For Your Legs.
In investing and running, there are no shortcuts. You earn every step. That’s something the Pretoria branch of their EasyEquities-powered running club knows better than most.

Back in 2018, the branch had just 18 members and zero weekend runs. No time trials. No hills conquered together. Just a handful of runners and a whole lot of potential.

Fast forward to 2025, and the club is 68 members strong, with the goal of hitting 200. More importantly, it’s become a community that shows up every week, through tough climbs, early starts, and long distances. The same kind of consistency and long-term mindset that builds a strong investment portfolio.

Running Up Hills, Building Down Risk
Every Saturday, when there’s no race on, the club hits the hills. Literally. Two routes: The Cruncher and Huff n Puff. They start as early as 5am and stretch up to 40km. They’re not easy. And that’s exactly the point.

It’s no different from investing. Real results come from showing up regularly, even when it’s uncomfortable, even when no one is watching.

Comrades 2025
This year, 29 runners from the EasyEquities Born2Run club are taking on the 2025 Comrades Marathon, including four social members and one runner all the way from Australia.

The slogan for the 2025 Comrades Marathon is "More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo". It emphasizes the race's transformative nature and global running community. The slogan is intended to capture the essence of the event as a life-altering journey, a pilgrimage for runners united by sportsmanship and a shared passion.

The club’s elite runners are chasing sub-6 and sub-6:30 finish times. Others are chasing personal bests, silvers, and even just the finish line itself. Every goal matters. Every journey is valid.

From Time Trials to Tax-Free Savings

For Nuno, running and investing go hand in hand. He’s built two portfolios on EasyEquities: one in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and one in EasyProperties. He’s also inspired his family, his father and brother invest with EasyEquities; and wants more of his club members to start.

“My father, my brother we’re all on Easy. A few of our members have started too, but I want to see even more take that first step.”

The Hills Build You
Running uphill doesn’t just make you stronger. It makes you honest. It gives you the same kind of mental discipline that pays off in investing: don’t skip sessions, don’t chase shortcuts, and hydrate (or rebalance) regularly.

Pretoria’s club is proof: if you stick with it, on the road or in the market, you’ll look back and be amazed at how far you’ve come.
