I joined a conversation this week that completely changed how I see Optasia - and I was already impressed.
Their name’s been all over the place lately. You’ve probably seen the hype on socials, read the headlines, maybe even spotted the stats: they’re in 38 countries, serve close to 130 million users a month, and just listed on the JSE yesterday.
But here’s the thing - none of that prepared me for what I heard when I sat in on a chat between our Chief Enablement Officer, Carel, and Salvador Anglada, the CEO of Optasia.
I still can’t quite believe he made time to talk to us - and to our community - the same day his company went public. That small, unexpected gesture said a lot.
I already knew the business was big, and I’d seen the interest from our community (not to mention how many of you joined the IPO). But what hit me during that conversation was how much of what they’re doing sounds like us.
The alignment of profit with purpose? That one really landed.
It reminded me why I love this job - and why, even on the rough mornings (after your toddler has woken you up 10 times in the night), I get up excited to do it all again. Because we’re not just here to help people invest. We’re here to change what investing means - who it’s for, what it makes possible, and the kind of future it helps build.
That sense of meaning has always come from Charles, our CEO. And it was wild to hear Salvador echo the same kind of passion - about using tech to drive inclusion, and helping people who’ve been excluded from the financial system get access to credit in a way that’s sustainable, thoughtful and data-led.
I couldn’t help but feel proud. Not just of the conversation, but of the company I get to represent.
So if you’ve got 15 minutes, give it a watch. It’s insightful. It’s inspiring. And if you were part of the IPO - you got to be part of something truly rare.
The EasyEquities community got over 60% allocation of what they applied for in the IPO. That’s not normal. In fact, in most IPOs, retail investors barely get a look-in. But this time, retail investors - our investors - got a meaningful piece of a limited opportunity.
It’s not every day that a global CEO takes time out to talk to the retail investor community. But when they do? You realise this thing we’re building here… it’s more than just a platform.
And every so often, someone says it out loud and reminds you.
