The African Bank Soweto Marathon has earned its place as one of South Africa’s most meaningful road races. Known as The People’s Race, it carries the weight of history and the warmth of community spirit. It’s the only event of its size that winds through a township whose streets have shaped the country.
Runners pass iconic landmarks such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Walter Sisulu Square, the Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, Morris Isaacson High School, the June 16 Memorial Acre, Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial. It’s a route that asks you to dig deep while reminding you why you run in the first place.
On the last week of November, EasyEquities Born2Run athlete Thabo Hlako answered that call once again, winning the over-60 category with a performance that combined strength, calm and gratitude.
“The 2025 Soweto Marathon was a truly wonderful experience,” he says. “Despite the steady rain, the weather felt perfect for running and the entire event was exceptionally well organised this year. I came into the race determined to defend my position as number one, and by the grace of God I was able to achieve it once again.”
For Thabo, the finish line is shared with many others. “A heartfelt thank you to EasyEquities Born2Run and Run Away Sport for their unwavering support throughout the journey. I would also like to acknowledge Nuno Thomaz, Andrew Beggs and Sandra Brownrigg from EasyEquities Born2Run, for their encouragement, motivation and belief in me. Their support made a huge difference on race day.
“Overall, the marathon was memorable, challenging and deeply rewarding – a celebration of endurance, community and gratitude.”
Nuno, Pretoria chairperson of EasyEquities Born2Run, speaks about Thabo with the admiration of someone who has watched his journey unfold.
“Thabo Hlako is a true gentleman whether on or off the road. Always friendly and sincere. His love for running and his sportsmanship show his identity for the sport, fellow competitors and all involved in our remarkable sport. He is truly an icon in EasyEquities Born2Run colours. His continuous achievements show that at 60-plus, age is just a number. We are really proud of him.”
For Shaun Keeling from EasyEquities, Thabo’s race echoes the philosophy that shapes the brand.
“EasyEquities is proud to sponsor Born2Run, one of South Africa’s top national running clubs,” he says. “The partnership reflects a shared belief in discipline, community and the pursuit of personal goals. Born2Run athletes carry these values onto every road and trail, and their achievements continue to inspire both our running and investing communities.
“At EasyEquities, we believe in helping people reach their dreams, whether in investing or out on the road. Just like a marathon, investing takes patience, discipline and the commitment to stay the course, especially as we hit the year-end stretch.
“This spirit truly came to life through Thabo Hlako at the 2025 Soweto Marathon. Running in steady rain, Thabo once again defended his number-one position with calm determination. He’s a genuine gentleman, friendly, sincere and deeply passionate about the sport.
“At over 60, he continues to show that age is just a number, proudly flying the EasyEquities Born2Run colours. We couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Thabo podium result is a reminder of what makes The People’s Race so special. It’s a celebration of heritage, resilience and the simple joy of moving forward, one determined step at a time.
