A South African Investor at Buffett’s Table

Join EasyEquities investor Cam Maingard as he heads to the legendary Berkshire Hathaway meeting to soak up Buffett’s wisdom, share live updates, and explore what this investing pilgrimage can teach us all.

Cam’s off to the Buffett AGM
Hello to the Easy Community! My name is Cameron (Cam for short), and I have the privilege of representing EasyEquities at the Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway) shareholders meeting this year! I am actually writing this while on my flight to the US, and I hope that in this blog you can 1) experience the excitement, and 2) come along for the journey and learn with me.

Cam Berkshire AGM
To give a bit of background about myself – I am a Durban-nite born and bred, and besides my 4-year stint in Stellies and a 1-year gap year in the US in 2020, I have remained in Durban up to this point. I completed my accounting articles in 2023, and since then, my day-to-day job is being part of a world-class team that provides sell-side advisory work to privately owned businesses (in other words: we help private business owners exit their businesses).

Outside of work, you can find me spending time with family and friends (including my church family), exercising outdoors, or reading a great book. The last fact about me is that I started investing when I was 15 and fell in love with it. I have been an Easy investor since 2018.

So how did I manage to swing this sweet deal with EasyEquities? Honestly, all I can say is it has come down to aligned interests, outlooks, and relationship. I first reached out to Carel and Charles years ago via mail, suggesting some ideas I had around the platform. With a shared passion for the platform, democratising investing, and long-term wealth creation, emails became calls, and here we are. When Carel found out that I was planning a US trip, we decided to partner.

So why the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders meeting?
Guys, this is the pilgrimage for investors globally. If you are anyone who claims to be a long-term investor and wealth creator, you can’t exist without some form of respect for Warren Buffett. The Oracle of Omaha. He has achieved annual compounded growth rates in excess of 19% since 1965!
New Call-to-actionAbove and beyond his performance, he is 94 years old and still the CEO of Berkshire. How can one not have respect for such a legend? Buffett is well known for his non-emotional, long-term, sit-on-your-hands-and-do-nothing approach to investing. In a world of instant gratification and short-term market speculation, he is a breath of fresh air. Buffett reminds us that logic prevails and good old fundamental value investing works. Can you tell that I am a big fan?

My goal at the conference isn’t to just learn from possibly the wisest investor of all time, but also to just soak in the experience. I look forward to rubbing shoulders with some of the investing greats and meeting some of them, and also participating in some of the weekend events like the 5km fun run on the Sunday! One thing I look forward to is listening in to Buffett’s answers on some of the hot topics: tariffs, AI, anti-globalisation, etc. He always seems to have a well-thought-out opinion.

At the conference, I will also have my ears perked for any stock picks and recommendations. I am already a Berkshire shareholder in my USD wallet, but I am keen to read and hear Buffett’s reasonings behind any new investments he makes this quarter – all of which should be available in the USD wallet too. And what will he do with his Apple holdings, which continue to be very significant to Berkshire?

Lastly, from an investing front, I will listen out for any key themes that are being focused on, and will look to allocate some cash to some AI-themed bundles in my USD portfolio (if you guys haven’t tried the AI bundles yet, I recommend).

To wrap things up, I look forward to having you along for the journey. If you would like to watch the meeting live with me, you can! See here for more information.

I will also be taking a couple of photos and videos during the conference to share, and will certainly wrap up the conference with a post-match blog to share my key learnings. You can also get my live updates on my LinkedIn page.

Keep a look out on the socials, and see you at the conference (albeit virtually for most) on the 3rd of May!

Take it Easy,
Cam Maingard
